Glenn Miller Orchestra – Featuring The Bluegrass Area Jazz Association (BAJA) Jazz Ambassadors
The Bluegrass Area Jazz Association (BAJA), a nonprofit organization that promotes jazz education and performances in central Kentucky through clinics, workshops, and support of the Jazz Ambassadors, a 17-piece big band comprised of area musicians including students from the UK Jazz Studies program – will present the world-famous Glenn Miller Orchestra for one performance at the Lyric Theatre located in the historic East End of Lexington.
With its unique sound, the Glenn Miller Orchestra is considered to be one of the greatest big bands of all time. The current Glenn Miller Orchestra was formed in June 6, 1956 under the direction of drummer Ray McKinley who had become the unofficial leader of the Army Air Force Band after Glenn’s disappearance and the orchestra has been touring consistently ever since, playing an average of 300 live dates a year, all around the world. Other leaders have followed Ray including clarinetists Buddy DeFranco and Peanuts Hucko, trombonists Buddy Morrow, Jimmy Henderson, Larry O’Brien and Gary Tole, and tenor saxophonist Dick Gerhart. Since January 2012, vocalist Nick Hilscher leads the orchestra’s as current musical director.
BAJA’s Jazz Ambassadors will take the stage first on this historic evening, performing its special brand of big band music.
